After the success of the Peter-Gwen-Mary "triangle" in 2013, Sideshow continues the successful series of pieces dedicated to the world of Spider-Man
and inspired by Scott Campbell's unmistakable Comic style. The recent Maquette which depicts the hero with his beautiful red-haired wife, was released
in 2021 with an edition size of 1250 pieces for the exclusive version, including a colorful plush tiger cub, and 2500 copies for the regular version,
now called "collector edition" by the American house. The design of the piece proposes the cover of the variant
edition #1 of the The Amazing Spider-Man - Renew your vows series and was edited by Campbell himself in collaboration with Ian McDonald,
while the sculpt and the painting are the work of Steve Schumacher and Chie Izuma, respectively.
The statue portrays a moment of family relaxation:
MJ is comfortably seated on a large padded armchair, with the right leg folded under the left thigh and the other leg extended
down elegantly; the girl wears a pair of super short jeans that show off her gorgeous model legs (enriched
chromatically, on the feet and calves, with the "spider web" suit of Spidey) and a light blue tight-fitting t-shirt that highlights the flat abdomen
and the beautiful curves of her breasts. Peter, on the contrary, is literally "perched" on the back of the armchair, in the classic
blue and red costume, the mask pulled over him so as to leave his face uncovered and his arms tenderly wrapping his wife's face and shoulders ...
The sculpt is awesome and perfectly reproduces the original Campbell's table, thanks also to the excellent design and engineering of arms and
hands, realized in various parts to best achieve the delicate and complex "intertwining" that characterizes the scene. Even the lilac colored armchair
is masterfully sculpted, with the right curves to highlight the points of support of the characters, the excellent detail of the reinforced edges
and stitching, typical of leather seats, and the four rhomboidal wooden supports that complete the design. Two additional green soft cushions
are located on the sofa, acting as a support for Mary Jane, and (in the exclusive version) the plush of a tiger, to remember
the affectionate nickname with which the model usually calls her hero. Painting and details are made with great care: the (not easy) design of the
cobweb on Spidey's costume, the soft shades on MJ's hair or on the various parts of the armchair, the tufts of hair that come out
from Peter's mask, the contours and folds on the model's t-shirt and also the lively coloring of the tiger! The only drawback of this
really well done statue, in my opinion, is in MJ's eyes that show a very slight squint and that, with a pinch of extra attention, could be avoided.
Nevertheless, this collectible remains awesome and offers a great visual impact: an absolute "must-have" for all fans of the
character and, in particular, of Campbell's original style.
